This is an 800km ultra-distance bikepacking race across Colombia's challenging Andes, featuring 18,500m of climbing on a mix of paved and unpaved roads. Considered an extremely difficult, self-supported event, it demands high levels of physical and mental resilience.
Visit official site →This event is for experienced, highly resilient ultra-bikepackers with strong physical and mental fortitude, a keen adventurous spirit, and solid planning and logistical skills.
Riders without extensive bikepacking experience, strong climbing ability, or the capacity to endure extreme weather changes, high altitudes, and self-sufficiency for multiple days will find this race exceptionally challenging.
Training should emphasize sustained climbing power, long-distance endurance, resilience to varied weather conditions, and proficient technical riding skills on loose and muddy surfaces.
Compare your W/kg to see how you stack up against this race's typical level — and which races fit you best right now.
Gravel or mountain bikes are recommended, specifically those with tires wider than 46mm, due to the 40% unpaved sections, which may include loose rock and mud. A climbing-friendly gear ratio like 38T x 52T is also advised for the long, steep ascents.
The route is not marked. Participants must navigate using a GPS device (cyclocomputer or phone app) capable of following GPX, KML, or FIT files. The organization provides the route file but not the navigation device itself.
Colombia's climate varies significantly with altitude, ranging from hot and humid valleys (up to 40°C) below 1500m, to temperate zones (18-25°C) between 1500-2500m, and cold conditions (9-17°C) above 2500m. High mountain passes (páramos) can drop to 4°C and frequently experience rain, so riders should be prepared for wide temperature swings and wet weather.
This is a self-supported bikepacking event. While a sweep vehicle (carro escoba) will follow the tail of the group to assist participants who can no longer continue and offer basic mechanical help (for the rider to use), participants are responsible for their own planning, logistics, and repairs. Provisions can be found in settlements along the route, usually within 40km, but high mountain protected areas have no infrastructure.
Mandatory equipment includes a helmet, front and rear lights (with reflective vest for night use), and the GPS tracker provided by the organization. Highly recommended items include a working GPS navigation device, a charged cell phone with power bank, a minimum 1.5-liter water capacity, a survival blanket, and a comprehensive repair kit with multi-tool, tire inflation, quick-link, and puncture repair supplies. Weather-appropriate clothing like an insulated jacket, waterproof shell, and warm gloves are crucial.
