There are two routes: a long route of 103km with 2,200m of climbing, rated 5/5 for both ride and technical difficulty, and a medium route of 68km with 1,500m of climbing, rated 3/5 for ride difficulty and 4/5 for technical difficulty.
The course is a significant mix of surfaces, with approximately 55-60% off-road sections including smooth fire roads, varied gravel, and chunky or rocky parts on climbs like Salter Fell, complemented by 40-45% tarmac back roads.
Gravel bikes are recommended, but hardtail MTBs are also suitable. Riders should plan for wide all-round gravel tyres, specifically between 42-50mm, for optimal performance across the mixed terrain.
The event offers a fully signed route, accurate GPX files, checkpoints with proper food (tea, coffee, cake, sandwiches, crisps) every 30-40km, mechanics at the start village and selected feed stops, and support vans for major mechanicals or collections. Finishers will receive a beer and have food available from a food truck.
This is a tough ride, especially the long route, which requires riders to be in decent shape, as it involves long climbs on and off-road and technical gravel sections, with estimated ride times of 5.5-8 hours. The long route is reserved for experienced riders.
