The event features two courses: the Grande at 82 miles (approx 132km) with 8800 feet (approx 2682m) of climbing and 46 miles of gravel, and the Medio at 40 miles (approx 64km) with 4700 feet (approx 1433m) of climbing and 25 miles of gravel. Both courses include a mix of pavement and rough Forest Service roads, with the Grande being particularly brutal due to multiple major climbs.
A well-tuned gravel bike with good brakes and large tires (38-40mm preferable) is advised due to rough and rowdy forest service roads. A wide gear range is essential for steep pitches. Riders should also be prepared for unpredictable mountain weather, potentially bringing leg/arm warmers and a packable wind jacket.
The event is described as 'super HARD' and 'brutal,' intended for experienced cyclists. It features significant climbing (over 8800 feet for the Grande course) on rough gravel roads, with challenging ascents and technical descents, making it one of the toughest Gran Fondos.
Registration opens on January 1st and closes on May 14th. Spaces are limited and fill up quickly, so early registration is recommended.
The course is well thought out and marked, with well-stocked aid stations. The Grande course has aid stations at miles 23, 44, and 63, while the Medio course has one at mile 23. Times of all finishers will be posted.
Full refunds are available up to 30 days before the event. A 50% refund is offered for cancellations made less than 30 days but more than two weeks out. No refunds are given within two weeks of the event date.
