The race covers 2,150 km with 33,000 meters of climbing across rugged, technical terrain including mountains, remote valleys, vast Karoo plains, river crossings, thorn bush, and brutal portages.
The Freedom Challenge is a traditional navigation event requiring map and compass; GPS devices capable of tracking or advanced navigation are strictly prohibited, though simple GPS odometers showing only speed and distance are allowed.
This is a self-sufficient event with no outside personal support; however, there are 20 community-supported checkpoints providing food and basic accommodation, and 16 interim stops with similar provisions, where pre-packed supply tubs can be accessed.
Riders must complete the 2,150 km course within a strict 26-day cut-off period.
Key rules include closing all gates, no motorized transport, no outside personal support, no GPS navigation, impeccable sportsmanlike behavior, and a strict prohibition on making open fires along the route.
The Freedom Challenge begins with small batches of 8-10 riders setting off from Pietermaritzburg city hall.
