Difficulty: 5/5 — Brutal
The GranGuanche Audax Gravel is a formidable 800 km self-supported bikepacking event across the Canary Islands, featuring 17,000 meters of elevation gain over a mix of unpaved tracks and secondary roads. With a one-week cut-off and challenging terrain, it demands proven experience and meticulous planning.
Visit official site →This event is ideal for experienced bikepackers and endurance cyclists seeking a demanding personal challenge and a collective adventure across diverse island landscapes.
Riders without prior multi-day self-supported experience, those unprepared for steep climbs, varied weather, limited natural water sources, and the logistical complexities of inter-island travel will find this event very difficult.
Training should prioritize long-distance endurance, significant climbing ability with low gearing, bike handling on gravel and technical sections, and self-sufficiency skills including navigation and basic bike repair.

The GranGuanche Audax Gravel covers approximately 800 kilometers with over 17,000 meters of elevation gain across the Canary Islands.
Gravel or mountain bikes with low gearing, a light setup, and a minimum tire width of 45 mm are recommended due to the significant elevation and unpaved sections.
The Canary Islands offer easy access to grocery stores, restaurants, and accommodations in towns. However, natural water sources are limited, requiring riders to carry at least 2 liters of water. A bivy setup is suggested for flexibility and safety, although the route can be completed using accommodations.
The route requires four inter-island ferries, plus a final ferry back to Tenerife for departure. A 'GranGuanche Ferry Pass' is available for €300, allowing flexible boarding on Fred. Olsen ferries; otherwise, riders must book ferries individually in advance.
Participants should expect highly variable microclimates, ranging from dry and sunny at sea level to mist, rain, or even snow in the mountains, with temperatures potentially dropping below 0°C above 2,000 meters at night. Strong winds are also common, especially on Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
The event is limited to a maximum of 99 riders, who must demonstrate proven experience in bikepacking or endurance cycling. There is an entry fee of €320, and 30 slots are reserved for women and non-binary riders. A refundable €100 deposit is also required for the tracking device.
