The Chilterns Gravel Epic offers a challenging 104km route with 1300m of elevation and a medium 74km option, featuring significant climbs on a diverse mix of gravel, tarmac, and dirt trails. It is considered a tough day for regular riders due to the sustained ascent and varied off-road sections.
Visit official site →This event is best suited for regular cyclists who have undertaken some training and are comfortable with sustained climbing on mixed off-road terrain.
Riders unaccustomed to frequent, short, and steep climbs, or those who prefer mostly flat routes, will find the longer option particularly challenging.
Training should prioritize consistent climbing ability, especially on varied off-road surfaces, and building endurance for a long day with little flat terrain.

The event offers a long route of 104km with 1300m of elevation and a medium route of 74km with 1000m of elevation.
Riders will experience a varied mix of surfaces, with approximately 60% off-road on the long route and 50% on the medium. This includes quiet tarmac backroads, smooth gravel, some chunkier gravel, and sections of hard-packed dirt trails.
The long route is rated as a 4-star physical challenge and 3-star technical difficulty, indicating a tough day with regular, often steep climbs. The medium route is a 3-star physical and 3-star technical challenge, offering a decent day out with some tricky sections.
Gravel bikes are recommended for this route, though a hardtail mountain bike would also be suitable. For tyres, a standard gravel all-rounder between 35-45mm will be ideal unless conditions are very wet.
The event provides a fully signed route, accurate GPX files, checkpoints with proper food and drinks, mechanics at the rider village and some feed stops, and support vans for major mechanicals or pickups.
On July 25th, the rider village at Kingston Blount opens at 7:45 am for number collection. The ride start is between 8:00 am and 8:45 am, with riders setting off in small groups after a briefing. The rider village closes at 6:00 pm.
